Mark 4:1-20

Mar 1, 2026    David Baalbergen

Jesus told a story about a farmer scattering seed.

Some fell on hard ground. Birds ate it. Some fell on rocky ground. It sprouted fast but withered in the sun. Some fell among thorns. It grew but got choked out. Some fell on good soil. It produced thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was planted.

And then Jesus said something that should make us all pause: "Let anyone who has ears to hear listen."

There's something more going on here than farming advice.

In this message, Pastor David Baalbergen walks us through one of Jesus' most famous parables — and more importantly, through Jesus' own explanation of it. Because unlike most parables, Jesus actually tells us what this one means. And it's not just about dirt. It's about hearts.

Hard hearts. Rocky hearts. Distracted hearts. Fruitful hearts.

This is about the word of God going out into the world and landing on all kinds of soil. Some of it gets snatched away before it even takes root. Some of it springs up fast with shallow joy but dies at the first sign of trouble. Some of it grows but gets strangled by the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things.

And some of it — by the grace of God — takes root deep, grows strong, and produces fruit that multiplies beyond anything we could imagine.

Here's the reality: we can't change the soil. Only God can.

But we can scatter the seed. We can share the gospel indiscriminately, trusting that the Holy Spirit will prepare the ground. We can pray for softened hearts. We can disciple those around us so their faith doesn't get plucked away, scorched by pressure, or choked by distraction.

And we can trust that God's word will not return void.

If you've ever wondered why some people seem to "get it" and others don't — this is for you. If you've ever felt like shallow faith or if you've watched someone walk away when things got hard — this is for you. If you've ever been strangled by the thorns of this world and felt your faith slipping — this is for you.

Jesus endured it all. He faced the devil's temptations. He withstood the heat of persecution. He wore the thorns meant for us on His head as He died on the cross. And through His Spirit, He holds us, grows us, and makes us good soil.

"And those like seed sown on good ground hear the word, welcome it, and produce fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundred times what was sown."
