Mark 3:31-35

Feb 15, 2026    David Baalbergen

What does it mean to truly belong?

In Mark 3:31-35, Jesus does something shocking — something that would have rattled every person in that room. His own mother and brothers show up outside, calling for him. And instead of going to them, Jesus looks at the crowd sitting around him and says, "Here are my mother and my brothers."

Not because He didn't love His family. But because He was doing something far greater — redefining what family actually is.

In this message, Pastor David Baalbergen walks us through the honor-shame culture of first-century Jewish life, the literary genius of Mark's "Markan Sandwich," and what it truly means that Jesus looked at ordinary, broken people — people He knew intimately, people whose sin He could see clearly — and still pulled them in.

This sermon is for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. For anyone whose family has been a source of pain rather than safety. For anyone who wonders whether they could ever truly belong somewhere.

Jesus not only invites you into His family. He secured your place in it with His own blood.

"Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother." — Mark 3:35 (CSB)
